DLSA Ganderbal organizes Legal awareness program at Subsidiary

GANDERBAL, MARCH 10: District Legal
Services Authority (DLSA), Ganderbal today organized a legal awareness program
on the vital topic 'Bail and Legal Aid for Undertrial Prisoners (UTPs)' at
Subsidiary Jail, Dignibal Ganderbal.
The event, held under the supervision
of Abdul Nasir, Chairman, DLSA Ganderbal, and guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary, DLSA
Ganderbal, aimed to educate under trial prisoners about the legal provisions
and procedures related to bail and legal aid for UTPs.
Sajid Irfan, Deputy Legal Aid Defense
Counsel (LADC) Ganderbal, highlighted the importance of providing free legal
advice on the process of applying for bail and the availability of legal aid
for UTPs.
He emphasized that the program aimed
to educate UTPs about their rights, including the right to a speedy trial under
Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
During the program, Sajid Irfan made
aware all the UTPS about the different types of bail, including bail on
personal bond, surety bail, anticipatory bail and regular bail.
He provided information about the
legal criteria that courts use to grant or deny bail. He also raised awareness
about the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, which guarantees free legal aid
for indigent prisoners, including UTPs, in all matters concerning legal
representation and bail applications.
He also emphasized the importance of
legal awareness and the role of District Legal Services Authorities in
providing free legal aid to undertrial prisoners.
In addition to the awareness
program, Deputy LADC Ganderbal, also
interacted with all twenty-eight prisoners who were presently lodged in the
jail.
All prisoners were represented by
their counsels. During the interaction, Deputy LADC Ganderbal found two
prisoners lodged in preventive detention. He promptly contacted their family
members and provided legal advice to them.
The program was attended by Jail
authorities, PLVs and under trial prisoners.
